What is Social Media Optimization?

Social Media Optimization

is the latest addition to marketing your website. So far we have used Search Engine Optimization to propel our websites up the search engine results of search engines like Google.

There are two methods of exercising Social Media Optimization:

1. Adding Social Media buttons on your website like RSS Feeds, Sharing Buttons, User Ratings and Polling tools allowing visitors to engage in your content.

2. Engaging in Social Media sites including Blogging, Commenting on other blogs, participating in discussion groups, and posting status updates on Social Networking profiles.

The term Social Media Optimization was first used in an article by Rohit Bhargava on the 10th August 2008 titled “5 Rules of Social Media Optimization (SMO)”. These rules consisted of:

1. Increase your linkability
2. Make tagging and bookmarking easy
3. Reward inbound links
4. Help your content travel
5. Encourage the mashup

Social Media Optimization vs Search Engine Optimization

The traditional way to drive traffic to your website is to use Search Engine Optimization to ensure you develop your website to match particular keywords used by users in Google or other serach engnes. This means that you have to skillfully incorporate those keywords in your content of your website. This means that you are not writing exactly what you want in the hope that the search engines will find your content. Additionally the likes of Google will change their algorithms without notice and you suddenly find your website has dissapeared off page one and you have to start again.

Social Media Optimization comes at it at from the opposite end starting with your website and engaging in converstaion with other blogs, discussion groups and getting them to visit by ‘word of mouth’. In this way you are achieving qualified visitors because they are already reading a topic they are interested in and will easily follow you to your website if they are interested in the topic.

So yes SEO is important but SMO is equally important.

Testing ‘The 6 Links’ 1 Million Free Visitors

Well we have all seen these ads all over the Internet and most of us do not bother because we do not trust what they are doing o are genuinely concerned about spamming and security. So here at TheNetShop we have decided to test some of these ‘Free Visitor’ Type systems. In partnership with KwikChex.com (The Reputation Checker) we will look at te success of this scheme. Before we started this test we made a number of checks:

The domain name and server information.
Checked the site for Malware and other malicious threats.

How the system works:

The system requires you to visit 6 websites, you need to remain o that website for 15 seconds then you will be given a code to copy into 6 boxes to get you started. Once you have done this you are then on your way. Whilst you are getting visitors they are only viewing them for 15 seconds so you need to make sure that your landing page that you supply has a compelling content, but then you should have that anyway.

2.0 – Research

Dont panic we are not going to do a degree in the subject we are going to find out what people are talking about in your industry sector. Remember you need to engage your audience so you need to find out who is talking, asking questions about your industry. So this is what you need to do:

2.1 – List your top 10 topics

Write out a simple list of 10 topics you think people like talking about in your industry sector. We are going to use a simple tool that will hunt the Internet for mentions of these topics, so think about what people are writing about. Later you will be using this tool to engage in topics of conversation.

2.2 – Google Alerts

The tool we will be using is Google Alerts to monitor the 10 topics you have chosen above. Firstly you will need to register with Google Webmaster Central. Dont panic you dont have to be a web guru to follow this. Once you have done this and logged in go to Google Alerts. Now setup a google alerts for your top ten topics and have the results delivered to your email everyday. You will now have a list that you can visit and see if you can either help or engage in and provide a link back to your website.

2.3 – Topics in the Social Media Websites

OK Google Alerts wont do everything so you need to search for topics in the following:

Facebook
LinkedIn
Twitter
Coconex

Once you have found a topic that interests you, then become a friend, connection, fan or follow the names and groups that result in your search.

2.4 – Bookmarking Sites

Now its time to setup some accounts with bookmarking sites. What are bookmarking sites? They are simply sites that store your favourite items found on the Internet. You will see on this site at the bottom of each page an icon for these sites and when you click on them (if you are registered) you will bookmark the page o your account. It is therefore important that your own website has these as well so that people can bookmark your site. Please now regsiter with the following bookmark sites:
